The government found ''The Department estimates that it underpaid 134,000 pensioners various sums totalling over £1 billion in state pension, with errors going back as far as 1985...The underlying IT system that is it relies on to manage millions of pensioner records dates back to 1988 and is heavily manual. Despite the complexity of state pension entitlements and the increased risk posed by manual processes, the Department’s existing quality checks failed to identify the systematic underpayment of thousands of pensioners.''
And 'Progress so far-Between 11 January 2021 and 31 October 2022, the checking process has identified 31,817 underpayments, owed a total of £209.3 million.'
